When the author’s oldest son, Adam, was confined to bed, his new collie puppy, Bonnie, entertained him and brought him comfort. When Adam died at age 13 of juvenile heart disease, it was Bonnie who brought the family solace and gave them a purpose to carry on.
Bonnie had her own health issues—Collie Eye Anomaly, an inherited disease common among collies that causes them to go blind. It was Adam’s love of his dog that inspired the author to breed collies with clean eye health. She named her kennel Adams Collies to honor Adam’s Love of Dogs. The collies she produced reflected that love with Adam’s name as part of their pedigree.
As the years rolled by, the author found her legs were no match for the long-legged collies she had to run around the show ring and she turned to a smaller breed, Bichon-Frises. Applying the same strict standards of breeding, Adam’s Bichons produced loving, sweet-tempered puppies, many of them champions in the show ring.
B.J. Burke retired after 43 years of breeding, whelping, raising, and showing, first collies, and then bichon-frises. Part storyteller, part teacher, she shares her stories about her dogs, their puppies, and the people who bought them, coupled with lots of valuable information for both dog owners and wanna-be dog owners.

STORMS in the Northland examines the heart of a teenage girl from a middle class working family who is taken in by the trappings of wealth while caring for the children of a wealthy member of the congregation in the nursery at her church. With the coming of maturity and unfolding of events, she realizes her idol and benefactor, Marjorie Congdon LeRoy, was capable of many evil acts.

What sadness this architectural, glorious piece of Real Estate had brought. This home of the Congdon family for decades had a large role in the growth of Duluth. The history and horrors bring sadness to her mind.
